Abrasion Resistant Steel Plates are the first choice for industries where machines face constant sliding, impact and grinding. Mining, cement, steel, power, earthmoving and material handling plants all lose money when ordinary steel wears out fast. This guide explains what abrasion resistant steel is, which grades are available, how to choose one, and where to buy it in India.
At Conquest Steel & Alloys, we stock and supply abrasion resistant steel plates in many hardness levels and sizes. You can see our full range on our Abrasion Resistant Steel Plates. Our sister website also lists the range at CSteel India.
Abrasion resistant (AR) steel plates are low-alloy, heat-treated steel plates with a very hard surface. They are made by adding carbon, manganese, chromium, nickel, molybdenum and boron, followed by quenching (rapid cooling). This process creates a hard martensitic structure that resists scratching, gouging and sliding wear.
You may also hear them called wear plates, wear resistant steel, AR plates or BHN plates. The hardness is measured on the Brinell scale (BHN or HBW). A higher number means better wear life, but lower bendability.
| Property | Mild Steel (IS 2062) | Abrasion Resistant Steel |
|---|---|---|
| Typical hardness | 120–180 BHN | 200–600 BHN |
| Wear life | Short | 3 to 10 times longer (depends on grade and service) |
| Surface hardening | No | Yes, through quenching |
| Best use | General fabrication | Chutes, liners, buckets, hoppers, crushers |
| Replacement frequency | High | Low |
Every plate is supplied with a manufacturer test certificate (mill TC) showing chemistry and mechanical values. Third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
We supply AR400, AR450, AR500, AR600 and 200 BHN plates, along with popular brand grades such as Rockstar, Rockhard, NM, ABREX, QUARD, JFE EVERHARD, Sailhard, JSP HARD, TISCRAL and UTTAMHARD / EVONITH HARD.
We keep regular stock in Mumbai and can supply full plates or cut pieces to reduce your waste and lead time.
We supply to customers in India and overseas with proper packing and documentation.
The hard surface resists sliding abrasion from sand, rock, coal, ore, clinker and scrap.
Modern AR grades keep enough toughness to handle impact loads without cracking, especially in the 400 and 450 range.
With correct preheat and low-hydrogen consumables, AR plates can be welded and fabricated easily.
Fewer shutdowns for replacement means lower maintenance cost and higher plant output.
A thinner AR plate can often replace a thicker mild steel plate for the same wear life, which reduces equipment weight.

The most popular grade. It balances hardness, toughness and formability, which makes it suitable for chutes, hoppers and dump truck bodies. See our Abrasion Resistant 400 and 400 BHN pages.
Higher wear life than AR400 with good toughness. Used in crusher parts, screens and bucket liners. See Abrasion Resistant 450.
Chosen for severe abrasion with moderate impact, such as cutting edges, wear liners and shredder parts. See Abrasion Resistant 500.
Maximum hardness for extreme sliding wear. These grades need careful design, cutting and welding because they are less ductile. See Abrasion Resistant 550 and Abrasion Resistant 600.
A lower-hardness option for structural wear parts, silos and machinery where cost matters and moderate protection is enough. See Abrasion Resistant Steel Plate 200 BHN.

We covered the basics in our earlier guide, An Expert’s Guide To Abrasion-Resistant Steel Plates. Here is a quick checklist:
Sliding abrasion needs higher hardness. Heavy impact needs better toughness, so a slightly softer grade like AR400 or AR450 often lasts longer than AR600.
| Working Condition | Recommended Grade |
|---|---|
| Light to medium wear, forming needed | AR400 |
| Medium to heavy wear with some impact | AR450 |
| Heavy sliding wear | AR500 |
| Extreme wear, little bending | AR550 / AR600 |
| Cost-sensitive structural wear | 200 BHN |
Higher hardness means more difficult bending, cutting and welding. Plan your design before choosing the grade.
Most AR steels lose hardness above about 200°C to 250°C. For hot service, check with the mill first.
Ask for mill TC, correct plate markings and clear delivery timelines.
| Industry | Typical Applications |
|---|---|
| Mining | Dump truck bodies, bucket liners, chutes, hoppers |
| Cement | Clinker chutes, fan liners, cyclone liners |
| Steel and Power | Coal handling, ash handling, conveyor skirts |
| Construction | Excavator buckets, loader blades, cutting edges |
| Material Handling | Screens, feeders, silos, bins |
| Recycling | Shredder parts, scrap handling liners |
| Agriculture | Ploughshares, harvester parts |
Plasma, laser or waterjet cutting is preferred. For thick, high-hardness plates, preheat to avoid edge cracks.
Use low-hydrogen electrodes and follow preheat and interpass temperature guidelines from the mill.
Use a larger bend radius and bend across the rolling direction where possible. Higher grades may crack if bent sharply.
Drill with carbide tools at lower speeds. Plan holes before heat treatment where applicable.

AR500 is harder (about 500 BHN) and resists abrasion better, while AR400 (about 400 BHN) is tougher and easier to bend and weld.
AR400 and AR450 are the most common choices because they balance wear life and impact toughness.
