Corten steel is a special type of steel that rusts on purpose to protect itself. When regular steel gets wet, it rusts and keeps rusting until it becomes weak and damaged. But Corten steel is smart - it creates a protective rust layer on the outside that stops any further damage from happening inside.
The unique characteristic of Corten steel lies in its chemical composition. When exposed to weather, the copper and chromium alloys in the steel react with oxygen and moisture to create a firmly adhering protective layer. This rust-colored oxide coating acts as a barrier, preventing further corrosion and continuously regenerating itself when exposed to atmospheric elements.
In simple terms, the steel is allowed to rust in a controlled manner to form this "defensive" coating, which gives it exceptional durability and a distinctive aesthetic appearance.

Understanding Weathering Steel Performance
It's important to note that while Corten steel offers exceptional corrosion resistance, it is not rustproof. The protective layer forms gradually over time through proper exposure to atmospheric conditions. The corrosion-impeding impact of the defensive layer depends on the specific distribution and concentration of alloying elements.
For optimal performance, the steel should be properly exposed to wet-dry cycles. In constantly wet environments or where water pools on the surface, additional protective measures may be necessary.
Installation and Fabrication
Corten steel excels in various fabrication methods:
The material's improved atmospheric corrosion resistance makes it particularly valuable where savings in weight or added durability are important design considerations.
Conquest Steel & Alloys is a leading Suppliers - Manufacturers of Corten Steel - Corten Steel Steel and Weathering Steel At Best Price offered by Conquest Steel & Alloys, Mumbai, Maharashtra., widely recognized for its superior resistance to atmospheric corrosion and commonly referred to as Corten B. Owing to its unique chemical composition, this steel forms a stable protective patina layer that enhances durability compared to conventional carbon steels.
S355J2W steel, produced under EN 10025-5 standards, offers improved weldability due to its controlled chemical composition. ASTM A588 (COR-TEN steel) was originally developed to eliminate the need for painting as a protective measure. Instead, it naturally develops a rust-like oxide layer that shields the surface from further corrosion while also providing a distinctive aesthetic appeal.
ASTM A588 is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel with excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion. It is well-suited for welding, bolting, and riveting in construction applications such as bridges and buildings, where reduced weight and long-term durability are essential. When exposed to the environment under suitable conditions, this steel performs effectively even without paint or coatings.
Mechanical properties of ASTM A588 steel include a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi (340 MPa) and tensile strength of 70,000 psi (480 MPa) for plates up to 4 inches thick. Plates between 4–5 inches offer a yield strength of at least 46,000 psi, while thicker plates up to 8 inches maintain reliable structural strength with slightly lower yield values, ensuring performance across various thicknesses.
The corrosion resistance of S355J2W+N comes from the formation of a tightly adhering oxide layer, enriched by alloying elements such as copper and chromium. While COR-TEN steel is not completely rustproof, the controlled surface oxidation acts as a self-protective barrier that continuously regenerates when exposed to weather conditions.
S355J0W weather-resistant structural steel is widely used in structural projects including bridges, buildings, tanks, containers, exhaust systems, vehicles, and industrial equipment. It is suitable for welded, riveted, and bolted constructions.
